Injury Risk On The Way To And From Work

This is the most risky part of the working day because people are exposed to road rage, careless rushing around and not being as awake as we should be or just feeling tiered after a long day.

The rush hour, the time we don’t care about anyone or anything, just our selves and getting to work or getting home as fast as we can.

As the title suggests, it’s the hour that everyone is in a rush and this causes accidents and fatalities.

Overall the speed of traffic during rush hour is on average 16mph, this is why people get all wound up and lose patients because it’s taking to long to get to work or home. This causes stress and anxiety and it only takes someone to not be concentrating on the road for a split second and you have a situation.
Here some facts about roads and their victims.

  • In 2007, 646 pedestrians were killed in road accidents in Great Britain.
  • This represents 22 per cent of all deaths from road accidents.
  • 40 years ago it was 78% higher and pedestrian fatalities were 2,964.
  • The number of deaths fell by 7 per cent to 2,946 in 2007 from 3,172 in 2006.
  • The number of fatalities has remained fairly constant over the last ten years.

This is a scary thought. It shows that it’s not just the rush hour and it’s not just the car drivers, its anyone and everyone who is anywhere near a road that’s at risk. Add to this the fact that people are tiered and irritable during the rush hour and you a have a recipe for disaster.

Just going to work can be bad for you. The other thing to remember is that it’s not just the journey to or from work; it’s the affect it has on you during your working day.

The stress and irritability are the direct result of the journey to and from work that can give people a reason for time off work. Stress can be very dangerous and in some cases, bring on a heart attack resulting in death.

Always take care and always stay calm and relaxed and if you give yourself time to be late, the chances are you wont be and in that case, you don’t need to rush.
